Why receive a Vessel Safety Check?

• The peace of mind that your boat meets federal and state safety standards and that in an emergency you will have the necessary equipment to save lives and summon help.
• Vessels that pass a Vessel Safety Check are awarded a U.S. Coast Guard/Auxiliary Decal that informs the U. S. Coast Guard and other law enforcement agencies that your boat was in full compliance with all Federal and State boating laws at the time of the inspection.

What items are checked?

• That the vessel's numbering is appropriately displayed.
• That the proper registration/documentation is on board.
• That there is an adequate number and type of personal flotation devices on board and that they are in good condition.
• That required visual distress signals are on board and that flares have not reach their expiration date.
• That the proper type of fire extinquishers are on board and fully charged.
• That engines are properly ventilated.
• That the proper navigation lights are present and in working order.
• While not mandatory, a marine VHF-FM radio, dewatering device(s), anchor, and a first aid kit are recommended.

The above list is not exhaustive and specific requirments do vary by type and size of boat; however, all of these items are currently required by state and federal laws and, if something is missing or non-operating, it can result in a citation should your vessel be inspected by the Coast Guard.

What if my boat doesn't pass?

If your vessel does not meet the requirements, your Vessel Examiner will provide you with information on what corrective action needs to be taken to bring your boat into compliance to receive your VSC decal. No citations are issued for safety violations discovered during a VSC. Once the corrective action has been taken, you can request another VSC, again at no cost to you.
