The Coast Guard Auxiliary Marine Safety and Environmental program is designed to facilitate and encourage Auxiliary support for the Coast Guard Mission in Sector Lake Michigan. The Auxiliary program, in conjunction with the Sector Lake Michigan, program supports the overall United States Coast Guard mission.
The Auxiliary has specific qualifications in these programs. The Auxiliary qualifications mirror those of their Active Duty counterparts– minus any law enforcement or military activities.
All Marine Safety programs open to Auxiliarists are based on the needs of Sector Lake Michigan and its Marine Safety units.
Marine Safety Education can lead to the Marine Safety Ribbon, and the Trident (Auxiliary Marine Safety) Training Program can lead to awarding of the Auxiliary Marine Safety (Trident) Device.
A major emphasis within the Auxiliary in 9th Western Sector is the Prevention Outreach Program, consisting of America's Waterway Watch and Sea Partners Program.

Auxiliarists also participate in Marine Safety oriented Patrols.
